Planning permission finally granted for Eclipse Energy offshore hybrid power station
home > wind | newsEclipse Energy have finally obtained planning consent to construct the world's first offshore gas-wind hybrid energy project. A 30-turbine 90MW offshore windfarm will be constructed alongside a two natural gas fields (Ormonde North and Ormonde South) located in the East Irish sea off the Cumbrian coast (see map above). A further 93MW of electricity will be generated from the natural gas extracted from these end of life gas fields.
We covered the 18+ month wait for planning consent in our January 2007 article Eclipse Energy Hybrid Gas Power article. Further information and technical details about the planned project are in that article.
Upon receiving planning consent Ian Hatton, the Managing Director of Eclipse said "Eclipse are delighted to have gained consent for the world’s 1st hybrid energy generation facility."
The new Energy Minister Lord Truscott added that "The Ormonde scheme is unusual in that it will combine wind and gas power to produce continuous electricity for the region. It is an exciting and innovative technological first that will make a contribution to our renewable energy aims.".
Now that consent has been obtained Eclipse predict that first energy will be generated in 2009 with offshore construction beginning in 2008.
