Dimmable energy efficient LED spotlights

Now LED bulbs are starting to appear in supermarkets and DIY stored in greater numbers, styles, and sizes than could have been predicted even a couple of years ago.
LED lighting technology is now particularly developed for spotlights in particular, and in this article we will look at a collection of spotlights which are direct replacements for existing energy eating and short lifespan halogen bulbs.
Energenie LED Spotlights
There is a new range of high quality LED spotlights on the market from Energenie designed to replace 12V (MR16) and mains powered (GU10) halogen spotlight bulbs.
Pictured above is the Energenie 3.5 Watt LED spotlight bulb which is a direct replacement for a standard 35 Watt halogen spotlight. Using just 10% of the energy of its halogen equivalent, and with a lifetime of >35,000 hours (compared to just 2,000 for a typical halogen) these bulbs can save a lot of money over their lifetime in addition to a big reduction in carbon footprint for the home or office owner where they are installed.
Assuming electricity costs do not increase (which of course they do!) replacing a 35W halogen bulb with one of these will mean 1 bulb is used instead of at least 17.5 bulb during the lifetime of the LED spotlight, and electricity costs will be reduced from £160 to just £16. The LED spotlight priced at around £10-15 will also work out far cheaper than the cost of the 17.5 halogens it will replace in its lifetime.
These bulbs are available in a standard and in a dimmable version making it ideal for retro-fitting where previously LED spotlights were not an option.

Pictured above is the 12V (actually 10-30V DC or AC) version of the Energenie LED spotlight for MR16 (aka GU5.3) fittings. One problem with early 12V spotlights (and cheaper units) has been that they were easily damaged by being connected to a voltage of greater than 13V - for example when connected to a battery. With these latest bulbs, the acceptable input voltage thresholds are such that they can be connected directly to a 12V battery bank without the need for a 12V regulator.
Currently (August 2012) this 12 Volt version is not available in a dimmable version, but the vast majority of domestic lighting circuits with dimmers are mains powered so the GU10 dimmable bulb would be used anyway.
